How to Edit Text in a PDF Online for Free

Guides3 min read

Editing text in a PDF usually means tracking down the original file, re-exporting from whatever made it, or paying for desktop software just to fix a typo. pdfCraft's PDF editor lets you edit text in a PDF online for free, directly in your browser — click any line of existing text and type over it.

Step 1: Upload your PDF

Go to the PDF editor and drop in your file. Free accounts can open files up to 50 MB and 50 pages; Pro removes the page limit and raises the file size to 500 MB.

Step 2: Click the text you want to change

Select the Edit text tool, then click any existing line of text in the document — it becomes editable right where it sits, so you can retype it in place. Need to add something new instead? Switch to Insert text to drop a fresh text box anywhere on the page.

Step 3: Download your edited PDF

Click Download PDF when you're done. Editing itself is free and unlimited, with no account required to start — you'll just need a free account (no credit card) to download the finished file.

What else you can do while you're in there

The same editor also has:

  • Highlight, draw, and shapes for marking up a page
  • Insert image, signature, or watermark onto any page
  • Crop whitespace to tighten up margins
  • Undo/redo for every change, so nothing's permanent until you download

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free to edit PDF text online?

Yes. Editing is free and unlimited on every plan, including without an account. Downloading your edited file requires a free account (no credit card needed), and free accounts can work with files up to 50 MB and 50 pages.

Do I need to install anything?

No. pdfCraft's editor runs entirely in your browser — nothing to download or install.

Will editing preserve the PDF's original font exactly?

Closely, not pixel-perfect. When you edit existing text, pdfCraft matches it to the closest of its built-in font families based on what it detects in the file — it won't reproduce an unusual embedded font exactly, but for standard body text the result reads naturally.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

Not directly — text editing needs a real, selectable text layer, and a scanned or image-only PDF doesn't have one. Run it through OCR first to turn the scan into searchable, editable text, then open it in the editor.

Does the editor's "erase" tool count as redaction?

No — erase paints over the selected area but doesn't remove the underlying text from the file, so it isn't safe for sensitive information. For permanent removal, use the dedicated redaction tool, covered in How to Redact a PDF.

What if my PDF is password-protected?

Remove the password first with pdfCraft's unlock tool — see How to Remove a Password from a PDF — then open the unlocked copy in the editor.
